Abaddon

Abaddon (meaning destruction or the destroyer) is the Hebrew name of the angel of the bottomless pit, whose Greek equivalent is Apollyon. In the poetic books of the Old Testament—Job, Proverbs, and Psalms—the word appears as a personification of the realm of the dead or the place of ruin, parallel to Sheol. The Revised Version retains the word untranslated in several passages.

In the New Testament, Abaddon appears in Revelation 9:11 as the name of the angel-king who rules over the locusts of the fifth trumpet judgment. Whether the figure represents Satan himself or a subordinate demonic power, the term in both Testaments conveys the concept of thoroughgoing destruction and the dominion of death.
