Abia

Person

Abia is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Abijah (meaning my father is the LORD). It occurs in the New Testament genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:7) and in Luke 1:5, where it names the priestly division to which Zechariah the father of John the Baptist belonged—the eighth of the twenty-four priestly courses established by David (1 Chronicles 24:10). The form Abiah also appears in 1 Chronicles 7:8 for a son of Becher of Benjamin.
