Abiram

Abiram (meaning father of height, i.e., proud) is the name of two men in the Old Testament. (1.) The son of Eliab of the tribe of Reuben, who joined Korah's conspiracy against the authority of Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. When Moses summoned him, he refused to appear. The divine judgment that followed swallowed Abiram, his household, and the other conspirators in an earthquake, while fire consumed the 250 who offered incense. The event is cited in Psalms 106:17 and Numbers 26:9 as a perpetual warning. (2.) The firstborn son of Hiel of Bethel, who died when his father laid the foundations of Jericho—fulfilling Joshua's curse (1 Kings 16:34).
