Abishai
Person Name
Name meaning: "the present of my father"
Abishai (meaning the present of my father or desirous of a gift) was the eldest son of Zeruiah, David's sister, and the brother of Joab and Asahel. He was one of David's most loyal and fierce warriors. He accompanied David alone into Saul's camp and restrained the king from killing Saul himself (1 Samuel 26:5–9). He commanded a third of David's army at the battle of Mahanaim against Absalom, rescued David when he was in danger from Ishbi-benob the Philistine, and killed Sheba son of Bichri's rebellion along with Joab. Though valiant, he shared in some of Joab's more violent excesses.
