Achish

Achish (possibly a royal title among the Philistines, meaning thus it is) was the king of the Philistine city of Gath. David sought refuge at his court twice during his flight from Saul. On the first visit, sensing the danger of his situation, David feigned madness to escape (1 Samuel 21:10–15)—an episode recalled in the superscription of Psalm 34, where the king is called Abimelech. On the second occasion David came with six hundred warriors, and Achish allocated him Ziklag as a residence. Achish trusted David as a loyal vassal, but the other Philistine lords refused to allow David to join their campaign against Saul, sending him back to Ziklag (1 Samuel 29:2–11).
