Achzib

Achzib (meaning falsehood or liar, possibly in the sense of a brook that fails in summer) is the name of two Israelite towns. (1.) A town in the Shephelah lowlands of Judah, probably the same as Chezib where Judah's son Shelah was born (Genesis 38:5; Joshua 15:44). (2.) A Phoenician coastal city north of Accho, assigned to the tribe of Asher but never wrested from its Phoenician inhabitants (Joshua 19:29; Judges 1:31). The Greeks called this northern site Ecdippa. The prophet Micah uses the name Achzib in a wordplay to describe the towns of Judah as a deception to the kings of Israel (Micah 1:14).
