Acre

Acre, in the biblical sense, is the translation of the Hebrew tse'med (literally a yoke), denoting the area of land that a yoke of oxen could plow in a single day—roughly equivalent to an English acre. The unit appears in two passages: Isaiah 5:10, where it forms part of a prophetic threat of agricultural failure, and 1 Samuel 14:14, which uses it to describe the space of ground across which Jonathan and his armor-bearer struck down the Philistines. The yoke-based measure was a practical field unit common in the ancient Near East.
