Adah

Adah (meaning ornament or an assembly) is the name of two women in the Old Testament. The first was one of Lamech's two wives in the antediluvian period, and the mother of Jabal, the ancestor of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock, and Jubal, the ancestor of those who play the harp and flute. She is among the earliest named women in Scripture, appearing in the brief but significant genealogy of Cain's line in Genesis 4.

The second Adah was a wife of Esau and the daughter of Elon the Hittite, also called Bashemath in some references. She is listed among Esau's Canaanite wives whose presence grieved his parents Isaac and Rebekah, and she bore Esau's son Eliphaz, who became the ancestor of the Edomite clans. Though both women share the same name and period of patriarchal history, they belong to distinct narrative contexts separated by several generations.
