Agagite

Person

Agagite is a designation applied to Haman and his father Hammedatha in the book of Esther (3:1, 10; 8:3, 5; 9:24). The term most naturally connects Haman to the Amalekite royal line of Agag, making him a descendant of Israel's ancient enemies. If this identification is correct, the conflict between Haman and Mordecai — a descendant of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin, the same tribal background as King Saul — would represent the continuation of the ancient enmity between Israel and Amalek, now playing out in the Persian court centuries after the time of Samuel and Saul.

Some scholars prefer to understand Agagite as a geographic or clan term rather than a genealogical connection to the Amalekite king Agag, but the canonical reading within the book of Esther clearly intends a narrative resonance with the earlier failure of Saul to destroy Agag — a failure now met by Mordecai's refusal to bow, and by the eventual destruction of Haman and his sons.
