Ah!

Ah! is an exclamation in the biblical text expressing grief, distress, or lamentation. In Psalms 35:25, the cry Aha! So would we have it is the mocking shout of enemies over the afflicted psalmist, while the distress-cry Ah! itself voices the anguish of the speaker or the grief of God himself. Isaiah opens with it — Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity (Isaiah 1:4) — as a prophetic cry of mourning over Israel's condition. Jeremiah uses it at his prophetic call: Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child (Jeremiah 1:6).

The exclamation also appears in contexts of divine lamentation and threat. In Isaiah 1:24, God himself employs it: Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries — a phrase denoting the divine resolve to act in judgment. In Ezekiel and Jeremiah, similar interjections mark moments of prophetic anguish or divine pathos. The particle thus functions as a marker of deep emotional engagement — mourning, alarm, and lamentation — throughout the prophetic literature.
