Ai

Ai (meaning ruins) was one of the royal Canaanite cities lying east of Bethel, near which Abraham pitched his tent and built an altar after entering Canaan (Gen. 12:8; 13:3). It is most prominent in the conquest narrative: Israel's first assault was routed — a defeat traced to Achan's hidden theft of devoted spoil from Jericho (Josh. 7). After Achan's judgment, Joshua returned with a larger force and destroyed Ai by means of an ambush, burning the city and making it a permanent ruin (Josh. 8).

The site is tentatively identified with et-Tell or a nearby location, though archaeological debate continues. A later resettlement appears as Aiath or Aija in Isaiah 10:28. The story of Ai stands as a central lesson in the conquest narrative: Israel's military success depended absolutely on covenant faithfulness before God.
