Air

Air in biblical usage refers primarily to the atmosphere — the region between earth and the higher heavens. In the New Testament it carries additional theological significance: Paul describes believers being caught up to meet the Lord in the air at the resurrection (1 Thess. 4:17), while he also refers to Satan as the prince of the power of the air (Eph. 2:2), characterizing the spiritual realm associated with the fallen domain. Revelation associates the pouring of the seventh bowl upon the air (Rev. 16:17) with the final judgment.

In everyday usage the term describes breath and wind (Job 41:16) and can denote purposeless speech, as in Paul's warning against speaking into the air in an unintelligible tongue (1 Cor. 14:9).
