Alexander

Alexander (meaning one who assists men) is the name of several distinct individuals in the New Testament. (1) A relative of Annas the high priest present at the interrogation of Peter and John (Acts 4:6). (2) Simon of Cyrene's son, referenced in Mark 15:21 as apparently known to Mark's Roman audience. (3) A Jew put forward during the Ephesian riot to dissociate the Jewish community from Paul (Acts 19:33). (4) A man who made shipwreck of his faith alongside Hymenaeus (1 Tim. 1:19–20). (5) Alexander the coppersmith who did Paul much harm (2 Tim. 4:14).

Whether figures (4) and (5) are the same person is debated. The name's frequency in the Greco-Roman world makes identification across texts uncertain.
