Almug

Almug (also appearing as algum in Chronicles) was a precious wood brought from Ophir by the fleet of Hiram of Tyre for Solomon's building projects (1 Kgs. 10:11–12). Solomon used it for pillars in the temple and palace, and to make harps and lyres for the Levitical musicians. The text notes the quantities were so remarkable that nothing like them had ever been seen in Jerusalem before. Botanical identifications proposed by scholars include red sandalwood, juniper, and other aromatic hardwoods; the precise species remains undetermined. The same wood imported from Lebanon is called algum in 2 Chronicles 2:8.
