Amalek

Amalek (meaning a people that licks up or dweller in a valley) was the son of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau, by his concubine Timna (Gen. 36:12; 1 Chr. 1:36). He is listed among the chiefs of Edom (Gen. 36:16) and is the eponymous ancestor of the Amalekites, the nomadic people who inhabited the region of Sinai, the Negev, and the northern Arabian Peninsula. A reference to the country of the Amalekites in Genesis 14:7, before Amalek's birth in the narrative, has led some to distinguish between Amalek the individual and an earlier, similarly named people group, though others regard the Genesis 14 reference as anachronistic in name only.
