Amashai (meaning the people's gift) was the son of Azareel, a priest designated by Nehemiah to reside in Jerusalem during the resettlement of the city following the return from exile (Neh. 11:13). He is listed among the priestly families who volunteered or were appointed to inhabit the holy city, helping to populate and maintain Jerusalem's religious infrastructure in the mid-fifth century BC.
