Amittai

Person Name

Name meaning: "true; fearing"

Amittai (meaning true or fearing) was the father of the prophet Jonah, identified as a native of Gath-hepher in the territory of Zebulun (2 Kgs. 14:25; Jon. 1:1). He is named only in connection with his son: once in the historical record identifying Jonah as the prophet who predicted Jeroboam II's restoration of Israel's borders, and once in the opening verse of the Book of Jonah. Nothing further is known of Amittai, making him one of the many minor figures in prophetic superscriptions whose significance lies solely in their connection to a greater personality.
