Ammiel

Ammiel (meaning the people of God) is the name of four distinct individuals in the Old Testament. (1) The spy from the tribe of Dan sent by Moses to explore Canaan who brought a discouraging report and died in the subsequent plague (Num. 13:12; 14:37). (2) The father of Machir of Lo-debar, who cared for Mephibosheth, Jonathan's lame son; David later restored Mephibosheth's inheritance through this connection (2 Sam. 9:4). (3) The father of Bath-sheba, listed in 1 Chronicles 3:5 as Ammiel, though 2 Samuel 11:3 gives her father's name as Eliam — names that appear to be the same elements inverted. (4) A Levitical gatekeeper in the temple service under David (1 Chr. 26:5).
