Amon

Amon (meaning builder or faithful) is the name of three biblical figures. (1) The governor of Samaria under Ahab, to whom the prophet Micaiah was committed after predicting Israel's defeat at Ramoth-gilead (1 Kgs. 22:26; 2 Chr. 18:25). (2) The son and successor of Manasseh as king of Judah (c. 642–640 BC). Amon continued his father's idolatries but reigned only two years before being assassinated by his own servants. His son Josiah, succeeding at age eight, later reversed course with sweeping reforms. Amon appears in the genealogy of Christ (Matt. 1:10). (3) Amon (No-Amon) was also the chief deity of Thebes in Egypt, one of the gods upon whom Jeremiah pronounced divine judgment (Jer. 46:25).
