Amplias

Amplias (meaning large or extensive) was a Christian at Rome greeted by Paul in Romans 16:8 as my beloved in the Lord. The name was common among Roman slaves and freedmen. Inscriptions in the Catacomb of Domitilla in Rome include the name Ampliatus in a context suggesting early Christian use, possibly preserving a memory of this individual. If so, he may have belonged to the household of a prominent Roman family, explaining how Paul could identify him by name in a church he had never personally visited.
