Amram

Amram (meaning exalted people or friend of Jehovah) was the father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, the son of Kohath and grandson of Levi (Exod. 6:18, 20; Num. 3:19). He married Jochebed his father's sister — a union later forbidden by Mosaic law but predating that legislation — who bore him the three leaders of the exodus generation. Amram lived to the age of one hundred and thirty-seven (Exod. 6:20). His descendants, the Amramites, formed one of four Kohathite families responsible for carrying the most sacred elements of the sanctuary (Num. 3:27; 1 Chr. 26:23). A second Amram in the post-exilic period was a son of Bani who had married a foreign wife (Ezra 10:34).
