Anak

Anak (meaning long-necked or a collar) was the son of Arba, the founder of Kiriath-arba (Hebron), and patriarch of the Anakim — a people renowned for their great stature who inhabited the hill country of Canaan (Josh. 15:13; 21:11). Anak's three sons — Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai — still occupied Hebron when the twelve spies arrived (Num. 13:22), and their imposing presence contributed to the ten spies' discouraging report that the Israelites felt like grasshoppers by comparison. Caleb later drove out these three sons and took possession of Hebron as his inheritance (Josh. 15:14; Judg. 1:20).
