Anan
Anan, meaning cloud, was one of the leaders of the people who set his seal to the solemn covenant of national renewal recorded in Nehemiah 10 (Neh. 10:26). This covenant, made under the leadership of Nehemiah and Ezra following the return from Babylonian exile, committed the community to faithful observance of the law of Moses, including prohibitions on foreign marriages, Sabbath commerce, and neglect of the temple.
Anan is listed among the heads of the people who signed alongside priests and Levites, indicating his standing within the restored community of Judah. Though no further biographical details are given, his participation in this covenant ceremony places him within the circle of lay leaders who helped reconstitute Israel's religious and social life in the post-exilic period.
