Ancient of Days

Ancient of Days is a divine title appearing three times in Daniel's vision of the heavenly throne room (Dan. 7:9, 13, 22). The Aramaic expression conveys the eternity and supreme authority of God, depicted as an aged figure whose garment is white as snow and whose hair is like pure wool, seated on a throne of flames with wheels of burning fire. Before him a river of fire flows, and ten thousand times ten thousand stand in attendance as the heavenly court opens its books of judgment.

The vision depicts the Ancient of Days delivering judgment against the four great beasts representing successive world empires, and granting everlasting dominion to “one like a son of man” who comes on the clouds of heaven (Dan. 7:13–14). Jesus applied this son-of-man imagery to himself during his trial before the Sanhedrin (Matt. 26:64), making Daniel's vision central to New Testament Christology and eschatology. The title emphasizes that history moves under divine sovereignty toward a predetermined conclusion.
