Andrew

Andrew, whose name means manly or strong man, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the brother of Simon Peter. A native of Bethsaida in Galilee and a fisherman by trade, he was among the earliest followers of John the Baptist before transferring his allegiance to Jesus after John identified him as the Lamb of God (John 1:35–40). Andrew then brought his brother Peter to Jesus, making him the first missionary in the Gospel of John.

Called by Jesus from his nets on the Sea of Galilee to become a fisher of men (Matt. 4:18–19), Andrew appears in several notable Gospel episodes: he brings the boy with five loaves and two fish to Jesus before the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:8–9), and he relays the request of certain Greeks who seek an audience with Jesus (John 12:22). In Acts he is listed among the apostles present in the upper room after the ascension. Church tradition holds that he preached in Scythia and Greece and was martyred on an X-shaped cross at Patras.
