Anem
Name meaning: "or Anen, an answer; their affliction"
Anem, meaning two springs, was a Levitical city in the territory of Issachar assigned to the Gershonite clan of the Levites (1 Chr. 6:73). It is generally identified with En-gannim of Joshua 19:21 and 21:29, a town on the southwestern border of Issachar near the Valley of Jezreel. The alternate form of the name reflects a common pattern in which the same site appears under slightly different designations in different biblical lists.
En-gannim, meaning “spring of gardens,” suggests a well-watered location, consistent with the fertile terrain of the Jezreel Valley region. Levitical cities like Anem served as residential and administrative centers for the tribe of Levi, which received no territorial allotment but was distributed throughout Israel to provide religious instruction and priestly service to the other tribes.
