Antichrist

Antichrist, meaning against Christ or in place of Christ, is a term used exclusively by the apostle John in his epistles (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 7). John identifies the antichrist as one who denies that Jesus is the Christ and denies the Father and the Son, placing the term firmly in the context of false teaching and apostasy within the Christian community rather than geopolitical power alone. Notably, John speaks of “many antichrists” already present in his day, indicating that the spirit of antichrist was an active force in the first-century church.

The concept is related to, though not identical with, the “man of lawlessness” described by Paul (2 Thess. 2:3–4) and the beast of Revelation 13. Interpreters have proposed a wide range of identifications across history, from specific historical rulers to institutional entities to a final eschatological figure. Across the varying interpretive traditions, the antichrist represents the ultimate human embodiment of opposition to Christ and his rule, whose appearance precedes and is overcome by the return of the Lord.
