Antothite

Antothite is a gentillic designation meaning “a native of Anathoth,” applied in the biblical text to warriors from the Benjaminite city of Anathoth who served among David's mighty men. The title appears in two forms: “Antothite” in 1 Chronicles 11:28 and 12:3, and “Anethothite” in 2 Samuel 23:27, both referring to inhabitants of the priestly city northeast of Jerusalem. Abiezer the Antothite was one of David's thirty mighty men and also served as commander of the ninth monthly division of David's army (1 Chr. 27:12).

Jehu the son of Shemaah, also called an Antothite, was one of the ambidextrous Benjaminite warriors who joined David at Ziklag (1 Chr. 12:3). The repeated association of Anathoth with skilled warriors alongside its later fame as the hometown of Jeremiah and the exile-home of the priest Abiathar reflects the multi-dimensional character of this Benjaminite town in Israelite history.
