Apharsachites

Apharsachites were one of the foreign peoples transplanted into Samaria by the Assyrian kings following the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel. They appear in the Aramaic section of Ezra, where they are listed among the officials and colonists who sent a letter to the Persian king Artaxerxes protesting the rebuilding of Jerusalem (Ezra 5:6; 6:6). The exact ethnic or geographic origin of the Apharsachites is uncertain; they may have been an administrative or military class rather than a distinct national group.

Their appearance in the Ezra narrative illustrates the complex, multi-ethnic character of Persian-era Palestine, where Assyrian deportation policies had produced a mixed population in the former northern kingdom. The correspondence they sent to the Persian court reflects the political tensions surrounding the Jewish restoration under Cyrus and Darius, as neighboring groups sought to impede the rebuilding of Jerusalem and its temple.
