Apharsites

Apharsites were among the various peoples settled in Samaria by the Assyrian king Asnappar (generally identified with Ashurbanipal) following his deportation of the native population. They are listed in the letter sent to Artaxerxes by the opponents of Jerusalem's rebuilding (Ezra 4:9). The relationship between the Apharsites and the Apharsachites mentioned in Ezra 5 and 6 is disputed; they may be variant forms of the same group or distinct populations.

Like the other peoples enumerated in Ezra 4:9, the Apharsites illustrate the thoroughness of Assyrian population engineering as a tool of imperial control. By replacing conquered populations with foreign settlers, the Assyrians disrupted existing social and religious networks and created new communities with loyalties defined by imperial appointment rather than ancestral tradition. The descendants of these transplanted peoples remained in the region through the Persian period, forming part of the complex demographic background of Samaria in the era of Ezra and Nehemiah.
