Ard
Name meaning: "one that commands; he that descends"
Ard, whose name means one that descends or fugitive, was a descendant of Benjamin and head of one of the Israelite clans that entered Egypt with Jacob's household. In Numbers 26:38–40, Ard is listed as a son of Bela and grandson of Benjamin, counted among the clans of Benjamin in the wilderness census; his descendants are called the Ardites. The parallel account in Genesis 46:21 lists Ard among the sons of Benjamin directly, which may reflect a difference in genealogical reckoning or a textual variant.
In 1 Chronicles 8:3, the corresponding figure is called Addar, a name closely related to Ard and likely representing the same individual. The Ardite clan descended from him was among the Benjaminite families that survived to the time of the second wilderness census, despite the heavy losses sustained by some tribes during the wilderness period. Ard's significance is entirely genealogical, placing him as an ancestor of the tribal subgroups that formed the post-conquest Benjaminite community.
