Armies

Armies in the biblical world were the organized military forces of nations, tribes, and kingdoms, regulated in Israel by specific divine instructions. The LORD of Hosts (Yahweh Sabaoth) is the supreme commander of the heavenly armies and the God who determines the outcome of earthly warfare (1 Sam. 17:45; Ps. 46:7). Israel's military organization in the wilderness was based on a census of fighting men (Num. 1:2–3; 26:2) with each tribe forming its own regiment. The law regulated warfare: cities were to be offered terms of peace before siege (Deut. 20:10–12), fruit trees were not to be cut down (Deut. 20:19–20), and certain men were exempt from service (Deut. 20:5–8). Israel was repeatedly warned that military success depended on trust in God rather than superior numbers (Judg. 7:2–8; Ps. 33:16–17; Isa. 31:1). The NT employs military metaphor extensively — the armor of God (Eph. 6:10–18), soldiers of Christ (2 Tim. 2:3–4), and the heavenly armies at the return of Christ (Rev. 19:14) — while shifting the primary battle to the spiritual realm.
