Aroer

Aroer (meaning ruins or heath) is the name of three locations in the Old Testament. (1.) The most prominent is a town on the north bank of the Arnon, on the border of Moab, assigned to Reuben (Deuteronomy 4:48; Joshua 12:2). (2.) A town in Gilead assigned to Gad (Joshua 13:25; 2 Samuel 24:5). (3.) A town in the Negev of Judah (1 Samuel 30:28), where David sent spoil after his victory over the Amalekites. The first is the most frequently mentioned in connection with territorial boundaries and military campaigns throughout the periods of conquest and monarchy.
