Arphaxad

Person Name

Name meaning: "a healer; a releaser"

Arphaxad (meaning a healer or a releaser) was the third son of Shem, born two years after the Flood (Genesis 11:10). He lived 438 years and became an ancestor of Eber, from whom the Hebrews take their name. He dwelt in Mesopotamia and is regarded by Josephus as the progenitor of the Chaldeans. Luke's genealogy of Jesus traces the line through Arphaxad to Shem and Noah (Luke 3:36), making him a key link in the antediluvian and post-diluvian genealogies connecting Abraham to Noah.
