Asahel

Person Name

Name meaning: "creature of God"

Asahel (meaning creature of God or made by God) was the youngest son of Zeruiah, David's sister, and the brother of Joab and Abishai. He was celebrated for his exceptional swiftness of foot. At the battle of Gibeon after Saul's death, Asahel pursued Abner, commander of Ish-bosheth's forces. Abner twice urged him to turn aside, but Asahel refused and was killed when Abner thrust the butt of his spear through him. His death at Abner's hand became the pretext Joab later used to murder Abner, claiming the right of a blood avenger. Asahel is listed among David's thirty mighty men (2 Samuel 23:24).
