Ascension

The Ascension of Christ refers to the bodily departure of the risen Jesus into heaven forty days after his resurrection (Acts 1:3, 9–11). Witnessed by his disciples on the Mount of Olives, the event is described in Luke 24:50–51 and Acts 1:9, where Jesus was lifted up and a cloud received him out of their sight. Two angels announced that he would return in the same manner. The Ascension marked the conclusion of Christ's post-resurrection appearances and the beginning of his session at the Father's right hand (Hebrews 1:3; Ephesians 1:20), from which he sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (John 16:7; Acts 2:33). It is affirmed in the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed.
