Ashpenaz

Ashpenaz was the chief of the eunuchs in Nebuchadnezzar's court, charged with selecting and training the young Judean captives for royal service in Babylon—among them Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (Daniel 1:3). He was responsible for their education in Chaldean language and literature and for assigning them Babylonian names. When Daniel requested a diet of vegetables and water rather than the king's food, Ashpenaz was sympathetic but anxious about royal displeasure. He appears only in Daniel 1.
