Ashtaroth

Ashtaroth was an ancient city in Bashan, in the territory of the Rephaim, named after the goddess Ashtoreth—a clue to its early cultic significance. It was the royal city of Og king of Bashan (Deuteronomy 1:4; Joshua 12:4) and was conquered by Israel in the Transjordanian campaign. The city was later assigned to the half-tribe of Manasseh and became a Levitical city (Joshua 21:27; 1 Chronicles 6:71). It is sometimes identified with the nearby site of Ashteroth-Karnaim.
