Asshur

Asshur was the second son of Shem in the table of nations (Genesis 10:22; 1 Chronicles 1:17) and the eponymous ancestor of the Assyrians. He is credited with going out from the land of Shinar to found Nineveh and the other great cities of Assyria (Genesis 10:11–12). The name also occurs as a place name (the city of Asshur on the Tigris, ancient capital of Assyria) and as a collective designation for the Assyrian nation in prophetic texts (Numbers 24:22–24; Isaiah 19:23; Ezekiel 27:23).
