Ataroth

Ataroth (meaning crowns) is the name of several locations in the Old Testament. (1.) A city east of Jordan requested by and assigned to the tribe of Gad (Numbers 32:3, 34). (2.) A town on the border between Ephraim and Benjamin (Joshua 16:2, 7). (3.) Ataroth-adar, a border point of Ephraim (Joshua 16:5; 18:13). (4.) Ataroth-beth-Joab, a place in Judah (1 Chronicles 2:54). The most historically significant is the Gadite Ataroth, mentioned in the Mesha Stele (Moabite Stone) where King Mesha of Moab records recapturing the city from Israel.
