Augustus band

The Augustus band (also called the Augustan cohort or Sebaste cohort) was the Roman military unit to which the centurion Julius belonged—the officer in whose charge Paul was placed for the sea voyage to Rome (Acts 27:1). The Greek term Sebastē is the Greek equivalent of the Latin Augusta, the name given to Caesarea Maritima in honor of the emperor. The cohort was likely a detachment of auxiliary troops stationed in Caesarea, possibly serving as an imperial escort force.
