Azariah

Azariah (meaning whom Jehovah helps or he that hears the Lord) was one of the most common names in the Old Testament, borne by at least twenty-five individuals. The most prominent include: (1.) The high priest who officiated at the dedication of Solomon's temple (1 Kings 4:2; 1 Chronicles 6:9). (2.) The king of Judah also known as Uzziah, son of Amaziah, who reigned fifty-two years and was struck with leprosy for usurping priestly duties (2 Kings 15; 2 Chronicles 26). (3.) Azariah the prophet who encouraged King Asa's reform (2 Chronicles 15:1–8). (4.) One of Daniel's three companions given the Babylonian name Abednego (Daniel 1:6–7), who survived the fiery furnace.
