Bands

Bands in Scripture carry several metaphorical meanings relating to binding, connection, and restraint. Hosea 11:4 describes God drawing Israel with bands of love and cords of a man — a tender image of divine guidance as opposed to coercive control. Psalm 2:3 puts the rebellious nations' cry of Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords as a figure of throwing off God's sovereign rule. The contrast in these two uses — bands of love versus bonds to be broken — captures the ambivalence the concept carries.

In the New Testament, Paul uses the image of bands positively for the body of Christ. Colossians 2:19 describes the head from which the whole body, held together by joints and bands, grows with the growth of God. Colossians 3:14 calls love the bond of perfectness that unites all virtues. Ephesians 4:3 urges maintaining the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The image of Ezekiel 34:27 — breaking the bands of the yoke — becomes a picture of liberation from oppressive servitude, reversing the negative connotation of constraint into an image of redemptive freedom.
