Bariah

Bariah (meaning fugitive) was one of the five sons of Shemaiah listed in the post-exilic genealogy of 1 Chronicles 3:22, in the royal line of David descended through Zerubbabel. The text notes that Shemaiah had six sons — Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, Shaphat, and one more — making Bariah a member of the Davidic lineage in the Persian period. His father Shemaiah is counted along with the six sons in the genealogical count as seven.

Bariah appears only in this genealogical record and receives no individual narrative treatment. His significance is entirely genealogical — he represents the continuation of the Davidic royal line through the post-exilic period, maintaining the lineage that Jewish expectation associated with the coming Messiah.
