Baruch

Baruch (meaning blessed) was the devoted secretary and companion of the prophet Jeremiah, of the tribe of Judah. He transcribed Jeremiah's dictated oracles onto a scroll (Jeremiah 36:4), read them publicly in the temple, and preserved and transmitted them when Jehoiakim burned the original scroll. He witnessed the purchase of Jeremiah's field at Anathoth as a sign of future restoration (Jeremiah 32:12). God granted him a personal oracle of comfort amid the catastrophe of Jerusalem's fall (Jeremiah 45).

Baruch appears in the post-exilic period as a signatory of the covenant renewal under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:6). The deuterocanonical Book of Baruch, attributed to him, is regarded as scriptural by Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians but not by Protestants.
