Beans

Concept

Beans (Hebrew pol) are mentioned twice in the Old Testament. In 2 Samuel 17:28 they are among the provisions—with wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, honey, curds, sheep, and cheese—that Barzillai and others brought to David and his men in the wilderness during Absalom's rebellion. Ezekiel 4:9 includes beans among the mixed grains used to make bread in the prophet's enacted siege-ration symbolism. Beans were a staple food for common people throughout the ancient Near East, providing protein particularly in lean times.
