Beard

Concept

The beard held great social and religious significance in biblical culture. Israelite law prohibited trimming the edges of the beard (Leviticus 19:27; 21:5), a prohibition likely directed against mourning rites or pagan practices. Shaving or plucking the beard was a sign of deep mourning and humiliation (Isaiah 15:2; Jeremiah 41:5; 48:37; Ezra 9:3). The anointing oil flowing down Aaron's beard at his consecration is a poetic image of divine blessing and priestly unity in Psalm 133:2. When Hanun humiliated David's ambassadors by shaving half their beards (2 Samuel 10:4), it was an act of deliberate cultural provocation that precipitated war.
