Beer

Place Name

Name meaning: "a well"

Beer (meaning well) is the name of two places in the Old Testament. (1.) A location in the wilderness where God commanded Moses to gather the people and water sprang up; the people sang the well-song recorded in Numbers 21:16–18. (2.) A place in Gilead to which Jotham fled after delivering his fable of the trees, when his half-brother Abimelech threatened him following the massacre at Shechem (Judges 9:21). Both sites are otherwise unidentified.
