Behemoth

Behemoth (a Hebrew plural of majesty for great beast) appears in Job 40:15–24, where God describes it to Job as the supreme example of powerful creatures that exist beyond human mastery—the first of the works of God, eating grass like an ox, with bones like bronze bars and limbs like iron rods, lying in the reeds and lotus plants of the Jordan. Its identity is disputed: most modern commentators identify it with the hippopotamus, whose massive body and aquatic habits match the description; others have suggested the elephant, the water buffalo, or (in a minority view) a mythological creature. Like Leviathan, Behemoth serves theologically to humble Job before the Creator's sovereign power over all his works.
