Belteshazzar

Belteshazzar (meaning Beltis protect the king or who lays up treasures in secret) was the Chaldean name given to Daniel by Ashpenaz, chief of Nebuchadnezzar's eunuchs, when the young Judean captives were assimilated into Babylonian court culture (Daniel 1:7). The renaming was part of an attempt to reshape their identity—giving them Babylonian names, language, and diet. Despite this, Daniel maintained his Jewish identity and faith. The name Belteshazzar is distinguished from Belshazzar by one letter in Hebrew and should not be confused with the Babylonian king.
